As analysts say that overall demand for carpet is increasing due to the real estate market continuing to strengthen, the northwestern corner of Georgia is preparing to grow as well. With Dalton known as the “carpet capital of the world” and Bartow County being another top carpet producer, it is expected that these two areas will see an increase in production that will lead to job growth and a stronger local real estate market.

Shaw Industries, the leading producer of carpet tiles in North America, recently announced that they would be building an $85 million plant in Adairsville at the intersection of Highway 140 and Hall Station Road. The plant, which will encompass 600,000 to 700,000 square feet on 117.6 acres, will house 500 new workers. Construction is slated to start in 2014 on the facility that will make modular carpet tiles, and it is expected to last more than two years.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to see this aggressive growth from one of Georgia’s top corporate citizens,” Chris Cummiskey, the commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development said. “Shaw has played an important part in establishing Georgia as a global leader in the floor covering industry.”

Shaw is currently Bartow’s largest employer, with six facilities in the county, including another carpet tile manufacturing facility in Cartersville. Overall, Shaw employs about 15,000 people in the state of Georgia. Shaw will partner with the state to train the 500 new workers at the Adairsville facility.

“The steady comeback of the floor covering industry in North Georgia continues to reflect the resurgence of the global economy,” Gov. Nathan Deal said in a statement. “Companies such as Shaw Industries are moving aggressively to meet demand, and Georgia stands ready to equip them with the trained workforce and infrastructure network they need.”

Shaw Industries is a Dalton-based business that is owned by billionaire Warren Buffett, and they currently boast $4 billion in annual sales.
