Marsala, an earthy wine red color, was recently named the 2015 Color of the Year. Chosen for its extreme versatility, Marsala is a strong statement color that can be used across a wide variety of industries, including fashion, beauty, home furnishings and more.

Its extreme versatility means that Marsala appeals to both women and men, it is flattering against a variety of skin tones and it’s dramatic without being overwhelming. The color also combines well with an assortment of other shades, particularly neutrals, amber and golden yellows, the green shades found in both teal and turquoise and brighter blues.

According to Pantone, Marsala’s “tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness.” These characteristics make the color a great fit in the kitchen and dining room, as well as on linens throughout the home.

Marsala is also a great way to add elegance to a room, particularly when applied to textured surfaces, such as a rug or upholstered furniture. Also, changing the finish of the color will drastically change the effect it has in a room. A matte finish points toward Marsala’s organic nature, while adding a glossy finish to the color emanates luxury.

The color was also a hit on the spring 2015 runways, as many top designers incorporated the color into their collections. It was also found throughout beauty lines, as it is flattering on a variety of skin tones, particularly as a lipstick or blush option.
