Originally planned by Joel Hurt, a businessman and developer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and Atlanta’s leading families, including Coca-Cola founder Asa Candler, Druid Hills is part of DeKalb County and the City of Atlanta. It is home to many of Atlanta’s historic mansions along with the main campus of Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

• Olmsted Linear Park. The park was planned by the nation’s preeminent designer, Frederick Law Olmsted, in 1893. It has delighted many generations of area residents and visitors with its scenic routes, playground, trees and shrubs. The park is now maintained by the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance.
Historical Attractions
• Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. Completed in 1920, this Gothic-Tudor style home was built by Howard Candler, the oldest son of Asa Candler, founder of The Coca-Cola Company. Now, the home is a busy non-profit community arts center. Callanwolde offers classes and workshops for all ages in visual, literary and performing arts.
• Druid Hills Historic District. During the early 20th century, Druid Hills was the finest example of architecture in the area. The period houses in this district range from mansions to bungalows. The district also includes one of the major works by the eminent landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted, Callanwolde.
• Emory University. Emory’s main campus covers more than 600 acres of Atlanta’s historic suburb of Druid Hills. The beautiful campus features a thoughtful balance of buildings and green space. The original campus plan is the work of Beaux-Arts architect Henry Hornbostel.
