Do you live in a community or area where backyard chickens are a-ok? If you’ve ever though of raising chickens, or even if you’re just curious how urban homesteaders keep a flock and maintain a beautiful backyard, you’ll want to check out The Oakhurst Community Garden Project and Georgia Organics’ 4th Annual Urban Coop Tour.

The tour is Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24th and 25th from noon to 5 p.m. Visitors will have the chance to visit 24 urban coops in Decatur, Virginia-Highlands/Morningside and Grant Park/Ormewood. Each neighborhood will feature at least eight homes with varying flocks and coop designs. Homeowners will be on hand to dish about their birds and the pluses and pitfalls of keeping your own birds.

With the renewed interesting in eating locally and knowing where food is sourced, there has been somewhat of a chicken-raising revival. This tour is the perfect place to see how you can keep your own birds.
