Today, one of the greatest treasures of the City of Atlanta is the star of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio’s Around Atlanta segment. Get ready to explore the beauty, history and rich activities of Piedmont Park! Mark Banta, President and CEO of the Piedmont Park Conservancy, joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick to discuss the team behind one of Atlanta’s best parks and the park’s activities.

The Piedmont Park Conservancy is the team behind the park’s amenities, including the upcoming resort-style swimming pool, dog parks, facilities, park care and more. Not only does the team handle hosting some of Atlanta’s favorite festivals and special events, but the Piedmont Park Conservancy also takes care of the trees, flowers, grass, wildlife and everything and everyone else that comes into contact with the park.

Throughout the year, the team works hard to host dozens of special events that Atlantans can attend at any point throughout the year. Students and schools can experience the park as a classroom at the park’s environmental science summer camp program or on field trips. Banta says this is the perfect way to let the kids encounter nature and learn where the animals live, how plants grow, where food comes from and more.

The park also plays host to famous festivals such as the Dogwood Festival, Atlanta Food and Wine Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival and more. Banta comments that the park’s trees, which are more than a century old, offer plenty of shade along the walkways to create the ideal space for hosting events like these. In fact, the park has been hosting festivals and expositions since before it became a park! The park was the home of the 1887 Piedmont Exposition with the purpose of showcasing the natural resources of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama. The event was attended by then-Governor Gordon of Pennsylvania, General Pierce M. B. Young, Then-Governor David B. Hill of New York, then-President Grover Cleveland and more reputable figures. The exposition left Atlanta with a legacy as a reliable place to visit and conduct business. After its success as host to the Piedmont Exposition, the park was bought by the City of Atlanta in 1903.

The park’s history and more interesting facts about its role in Atlanta can be heard in full detail on one of the park’s History Walking Tours, beginning Saturday, March 24. Also kicking off that day is the park’s Green Market, which has been carefully curated by one of the Piedmont Park Conservancy team members, who selected each of the farmers, vendors, artists and more by personally visiting them and choosing them by hand. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., the Green Market is held inside the 12th Street and Piedmont Avenue Northeast park entrance and showcases live music, chef demonstrations, a board-certified dietitian, prepared food and drinks for breakfast and lunch, and, of course, the market and its fresh produce.

Learn more about the park, its upcoming events, the planned world-class swimming pool, other ways to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and ways to support the park by listening to today’s podcast or by visiting www.PiedmontPark.org.
