Gene Eidelman with Azure Printed Homes

Gene Eidelman, the co-founder of Azure Printed Homes, joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss founding a 3D home printing company and how the process revolutionizes the home building industry. Eidelman chats with host Carol Morgan on the All About Real Estate segment.

Originally from Ukraine, Eidelman relocated to Atlanta in the mid-1980s and has lived in the eclectic city for over 20 years. With a background in real estate development and construction, Eidelman and his business partner founded Azure Printed Homes three years ago to build more affordable housing with a positive environmental impact at a faster pace.

After building homes using traditional measures, the Azure team shifted to 3D printing methods. In the past two years, Azure Printed Homes has worked hard to perfect its 3D printing practices by trying different computer methods, finding the best equipment to print units and much more! Eidelman and his team delivered their first printed home unit last year.

Eidelman said, “I love when customers’ eyes start to sparkle because they have a vision!”

With no luck finding a pre-existing 3D printing system, Eidelman and his business partner decided to develop their own 3D printing technology that features multiple equipment pieces, including a printer and extruder. The printed homes company aimed to use sustainable materials that met seismic requirements and could withstand hurricane winds as well as incorporated roofs strong enough to handle heavy snow loads.

After much research and deliberation, Azure Printed Homes settled on sustainable materials such as recycled plastics, fiberglass and carbon fiber. The recycled plastic used by the home building company is derived primarily from recycled water bottles. Working with three different manufacturers, Eidelman and his team provide the manufacturers with a composite formula that consists of at least 60% recycled plastic and a mixture of fiberglass and carbon fiber.

Azure Printed Homes began its 3D home printing journey with 10×12 backyard studio units and has gradually expanded its unit sizing. The company’s 10×18 AUD units feature 180 square feet of living space, including a bathroom with a shower and a small kitchen. With stackable products, customers can purchase up to eight units together to deliver one large home.

Eidelman said, “While our biggest demand is for our backyard studios and small units, our next category is 900 square-foot homes!”

3D home printing is revolutionizing the home building industry. The process replaces the need for trades, such as framing, roofing and waterproofing, when it comes to building a home and is a more cost-effective construction solution. Azure Printed Homes develops one basic unit a day compared to the months it takes to build a traditional 180-square-foot home. Completing the unit, including flooring, cabinetry and finishes, takes approximately one week for a small unit and two to three weeks for the larger units.
