Jenn Dwyer, Managing Director at the True Colors Theatre Company, joins host Todd Schnick and co-host Bryan Nonni on this week’s Around Atlanta edition of the Atlanta Real Estate Forum radio show.

Dwyer works together with Artistic Director Kenny Leon to promote and preserve African-American plays, playwrights, artists, directors and actors. Dwyer is a trained singer, with a background in music and a degree in arts administration. Through her love for PR and marketing, she fell into theatre in Atlanta and has been doing it for the last 10 years.

Kenny Leon founded True Colors Theatre Company in 2002. He was formerly the artistic director of the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta for 11 years. He was approached, while directing on Broadway, to start a national black theatre company. “Leon said, I have no interest in doing that, but he did decide he wanted to create a theatre with diverse work and diverse artists,” said Dwyer. She continued, “the quote we use from the founding managing director is creating a theatre that looks like the world.” The idea was to bring people together who don’t look like one another to hear stories about each other in one place.

Kenny Leon won the 2014 Tony Award for best director for his revival of A Raisin in the Sun in which he directed Denzel Washington, LaTonya Richardson Jackson, Anika Noni Rose and many other amazing cast members. He recently directed The Wiz on NBC with Shanice Williams and Queen Latifah. This summer, Leon is taking this production of The Wiz to Broadway.

“We’re lucky he calls Atlanta home. I am lucky he is my partner and that we can cultivate the art that he wants to see on stage here in Atlanta,” said Dwyer.

Currently running at True Colors Theatre Company is David Mamet’s American Buffalo. This is the play that put David Mamet on the map as a major American playwright when it appeared on Broadway in 1977, winning the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best American Play.

This summer, the True Colors Theatre is running a play called Smart People. Leon is currently directing this production in New York, and it features Mahershala Ali, the actor who plays Remy Danton from The House of Cards series.
