This week’s guest on the Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio is Anthony Rodriguez, founder and producing artistic director for the Aurora Theatre. Located in historic downtown Lawrenceville, the theatre is currently in its 19th season.

When asked how they choose which shows to include in the lineup each season, Rodriguez states that they select from an abundance of shows that are currently in production around the country, or those shows that producers or writers pitch to them. In addition, they choose from issues that the theatre members are passionate about, as well as from conversation topics that they believe the community should be having.

One upcoming show sure to inspire a great deal of conversation is “Clybourne Park,” a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winner. The controversial play, which is an imagined companion piece to “A Raisin in the Sun,” discusses race and the gentrification of neighborhoods from the Caucasian family’s perspective. In addition to the play, the Aurora Theatre will host two community conversations on Oct. 9 and Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. These discussions are designed to open a conversation about the issues highlighted in the play and determine how they still affect our communities and neighborhoods today.

Other upcoming productions at the Aurora Theatre include “Driving Miss Daisy,”  the annual Christmas Canteen, a one-man version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” “Les Misérables,” “The Explorers Club,” and “Hands on a Hard Body,” the final show in the season, which centers around a contest to win a pickup truck.

One of the features that helps the Aurora Theatre to stand out is its desire to make sure that every patron has a delightful experience from the time they pull into the parking lot until the time they leave. The team at the theatre believes that the full experience is as important as the production that takes place on the stage, and they make every effort to ensure that every guest leaves happy.
