Today’s All About Real Estate edition of the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio Show features Heather Burt, member of the Junior Service League of Woodstock and co-owner of Beers Housing. Heather discusses the work that JSLW does in the community and the upcoming 2015 Holiday Tour of Homes.

The Junior Service League of Woodstock is an organization that was formed in 1990. The primary goal of the organization is to bring its members together to make their local community better, and it focuses on needy families. To reach this goal, the JSLW members hold fundraisers in their community and can regularly be found volunteering in the area.

Becoming a member of the JSLW is easy; each meeting is open, allowing new members to join at any time. There are also Member Mixers that allow current members to bring friends or acquaintances interested in joining the organization so that they can learn more about how the group works to improve the community.

Since the JSLW is a tight-knit group, many of the opportunities to assist families come by word of mouth. The group is also active in the community, allowing them to ask schools and businesses if they are aware of any people in need. This past year, the group was very involved in a project for “Team Jacob.” Jacob is a young boy in the Woodstock community who was unable to travel to and from school because he was unable to take his motorized wheelchair. The JSLW rallied around the family, held fundraisers, and was able to raise more than $28,000 for a transportation van so that Jacob was able to get to and from school easily. Just this past August, the group prepped more than 150 meals while working with a special program called Forever Fed, which uses a mobile food truck to deliver meals to families in needy communities.

The JSLW also holds regular community events. To raise the funds needed for Team Jacob and other families in need, the JSLW holds golf tournaments and tennis tournaments. Just a few weeks ago, the JSLW hosted a Woof-a-Palooza. This new fundraiser was a dog-friendly, music festival-themed party! Held at Dupree Park, the event included vendor booths, live music, food and drinks… and of course, dog treats. All of the proceeds raised during the festival went to Cherokee County Humane Society and Georgia Canines for Independence.

The JSLW has an exciting holiday event coming up, the Holiday Tour of Homes! This exciting event will happen on Nov. 14 and 15, marking the 19th year of The Holiday Tour of Homes. During the tour, visitors will see four homes that have been professionally decorated for the holidays by local designers. The night before the Holiday Tour of Homes, a preview party will be held for league members, sponsors, the designers and the homeowners of the homes on the tour. Proceeds from ticket sales for The Holiday Tour of Homes will benefit four charities: The Anna Crawford Children’s Center, Children’s Haven, B.E.A.T.S and Volunteer Aging Council. In the 19 years of he Holiday Tour of Homes, the JSLW has raised more than $300,000.

As is the case with any other volunteer organization, volunteers are needed to help the JSLW with the valuable work it does in the community. For those interested in volunteering, contact the JSLW via their Facebook page or website.
