HomeAid Atlanta, the designated charity of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association (GAHBA), is holding its third annual HomeAid Care Day on Saturday, October 12, 2013. HomeAid, along with the GAHBA and the NFL Players Association, will be assisting the Decatur Cooperative Ministry (DCM) to prepare a Family House for occupancy.

The DCM’s Family House provides housing and support services to homeless families in order to help them become self-reliant. Both single- and two-parent families can apply, as well as traditionally hard-to-place families, such as those headed by single fathers or those with teenage boys.

Bonnie Nelson of Ben Nelson Contractor will be acting as the project leader for the event, and together with HomeAid and DCM, they have created a project and donation list. Examples of projects that the DCM hopes to have completed includes replacing flooring, painting, replacing cabinetry, installing appliances and bathroom fixtures, pressure washing the house, steam cleaning the floor, adding on to the existing gutter system and doing yard work.

In addition to the material donations, they need a large contingency of volunteers to come out for the day and help complete the long, but possible, task list. If you have been thinking about participating with HomeAid, but you don’t have much time or you can’t donate materials, this is the perfect opportunity to get involved. The past two HomeAid Care Days offered a great opportunity for members of the HBA to get involved and give back to the community, as well as gives volunteers the chance to meet a few former NFL players.

This year’s HomeAid Care Days will be held Saturday, October 12 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Family House, located at 1760 Thomas Terrace in Decatur. To donate any of the needed materials or to volunteer for the event, contact Jean Hilyard at 678-775-1401 or homeaid@atlantahomebuilders.com.
