Rainy days and bored kids out of school for the summer are getting some Atlanta families down, but Sue Rodman is here to help. Site manager of 365 Atlanta Family joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick for today’s segment of Around Atlanta on Atlanta Real Estate Forum to share 101 free ways to stay busy in Atlanta, this summer and year-round.
Rodman and her partner Leslie Peterson started the website as a way to share with families some amazing free and fun things to do in the Atlanta metro area. Their site is dedicated to family travel, outdoor adventure and date nights. This summer, they’ve compiled years of research gleaned from raising young children and exploring the city into an eBook called 101+ Free Things to Do in Atlanta.
Rodman says one of her favorite secrets is using a library card to check out passes for several Georgia venues for free, one-day admission to places like Georgia State Parks or the Center for Puppetry Arts. There are other ways to attend the pricier attractions for free. Attend the Georgia Aquarium for free on birthdays, and once a month, the Children’s Museum of Atlanta offers free admission.
“Use the book as a guide,” Rodman says, to plan summer days according to what is free and when. She also suggests using the phone numbers and websites to verify the information, since each venue will update policies without notice. With the book, a family could spend a week or a month enjoying no-cost adventures without leaving the city. A few other gems Rodman highlights include an open track meet at Emory University, taking a ride in a private plane with the Young Eagles, climbing on planes from the Vietnam War era and stargazing on a date to an observatory staffed by astronomers. Atlanta is full of fun and free activities.
