In a recent survey conducted by Area Development magazine, Georgia was named the No. 1 state for doing business! The magazine’s fifth annual survey of site consultants ranked states based on their number of mentions by the consultants in three overall categories, including business environment, labor climate and infrastructure and global access. In addition, 18 subcategories were included in the survey.

In this year’s Top States for Doing Business survey, Georgia toppled Texas from its previous No. 1 ranking, and the magazine noted that Georgia’s accomplishment was especially impressive because of its strong performances in most of the 18 categories, including 12 top three rankings.

As Area Development notes, “Sparking growth in business investment and jobs has proven more difficult than expected for states as they have emerged from the Great Recession.” However, Georgia has been successful at drawing business thanks its business-friendly government. In addition to receiving this No. 1 ranking from the magazine, the state of Georgia was also ranked as the best place for business in America by a CNBC study.

Such rankings “are a testament to the commitment from Georgia businesses, communities, economic development partners, and the people of Georgia,” Gov. Nathan Deal said in a statement, indicating his confidence that “more businesses will consider expanding or relocating here.”

Georgia has a strong infrastructure that allows businesses to flourish. This infrastructure is supported by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, two deepwater ports and an extensive surface transportation network. In fact, the consultants in the survey ranked Georgia No. 2 for its overall infrastructure and global access.

Another area that Georgia received top honors in was workforce development programs. Quick Start, which provides training to qualified new, expanding and existing business, was ranked the No. 1 program all five years that the survey has been conducted.
