Though many Americans kick off summer on Memorial Day weekend, things are different in Virginia-Highlands. On today’s Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, Pamela Papner talks with co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick about Virginia-Highlands Summerfest.

Thirty-four years ago, the owner of Atkins Park Restaurant started a street party for this area of Atlanta, and eventually handed the reigns over to the Virginia-Highlands Civic Association a few years later. Papner says they association does typical community enhancement projects that are outside the scope of government. They built a park on St. Charles and North Highland paid for with proceeds from Summerfest. They also maintain other parks in the area and remain active in zoning regulations in order to maintain the area’s natural charm.

When the association took over the street party, Summerfest was born. Summerfest runs this weekend, June 3 and 4, as a way to get summer started. Guests can wander the Artist Market which will host over 200 artists curated by an online selection process. The art reflects traditional media from “very affordable to possibly expensive” price ranges. As they wander visitors can also sample some traditional festival food or try some new, healthier options. A kids’ area promotes creativity and art, and new this year, a Local Market allows shoppers to pick up unique, locally-made products like doggie treats or handmade soaps.

Back for its 20th year is the 5k run on Saturday morning. This is a popular summer race warm-up and also serves as a Peachtree Road Race qualifier. Plenty of runners finish the race and then take a nice stroll through the Artist Market.
