Atlanta is home to some of the best food and drink venues in the country, and it also has established itself as a southern culinary epicenter. On today’s Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, Dominique Love, co-founder of the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick to talk about the upcoming festival and how it has grown.

Inspired by a festival in Aspen, Colorado, Love and her partner decided that Atlanta would be a great home for a similar venture, where people could, “eat, drink and learn.” As Atlanta is an easily accessible city, the festival is the only food and wine event which focuses exclusively on the south. During the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival, Atlanta acts as a host to foodies from Texas to D.C.

Love describes the four-day event as “part conference, part party,” with 80 classes designed by an advisory council that spends months developing topics and speakers to dig deeper into history, politics and how-tos of food and spirits. By broadening the Southern concept to include “South of the Border,” and South Africa, festival presenters and vendors can bring in tequila, tacos and African wines.

Love says this year, there will be classes on crab fat, eggplant and the 1982 vintage which marks 35 years. The festival will also focus on street food and gas station food, so guests can experience chicken on a sick from Oxford, Mississippi or taquitos from Palmetto.

Starting on Thursday June 1 with an entrepreneurial workshop for up-and-coming restaurateurs, including a prize from Southern Living, the festival runs through Sunday June 4.  Love suggests trying the Friday day pass where guests can have lunch from Louisiana and then attend classes. Every night, there’s some kind of party, and the tasting tents are an all-you-can-eat extravaganza. Tickets are $100 and include all the food in the tents, which will be set up like a giant party, with fires, beer, bakeries, a wine salon and more.
