On Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, we usually talk about building, construction, and real estate, but today’s episode features Kim Hatcher from Georgia State Parks discussing how Georgia residents can escape it all by “glamping” in a yurt, and taking advantage of the state’s natural resources with co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick.
Hatcher, who grew up in Smyrna and was fortunate enough to enjoy camping as a child, has visited all 64 Georgia parks and historic sites in her role as Public Affairs Coordinator. This first-hand knowledge of the sites makes her an encyclopedic travel guide for residents who want to see more of the state.
“These parks belong to us, the people of Georgia,” said Hatcher. “They are our resources.”
Atlanta happens to be situated less than an hour’s drive from some of the most popular Georgia state parks, such as Sweetwater Creek, Red Top Mountain State Park and Panola Mountain, which Hatcher says is “like Stone Mountain, but smaller,” and less busy. Here, visitors can take guided hikes to learn about the wildlife and plants.
If people want to avoid the more crowded campsites, they can visit any number of smaller sites with cabins, swimming beaches, stand up paddleboards, kayaking and more. Places like James H. (Sloppy) Floyd State Park or Don Carter State Park provide perfect places for anyone of any age to enjoy being outside.
As state resources, these parks and historic sites serve as economical day, weekend or weeklong vacation spots. Parks have modern campsites with hot water, electricity and more. Visitors can set up tents or bring in RVs, rent cabins or experience glamping in yurts. Hatcher explains that glamping is “glamour camping,” because a yurt is like a tent, but with furniture and amenities, so the more urban of us can camp with some comfort.
Minimal fees apply to park and site visits, and Hatcher says the best way to gain access is to purchase a camp pass that will grant entrance to parks and parking. Rentals are additional fees, but are affordable. Each park and site has a page at the main webpage where an impressive list of events and groups can be found.
