Musical theater is making its presence known in pop culture these days. From the meteoric popularity of “Hamilton,” to the dozens of awards given to “La La Land,” it is hard to escape the hot musical trend. Today on the Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, Natalie Barrow from ArtsBridge Foundation, joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick to talk about how her organization is celebrating and rewarding high school musical theater in Georgia.

Every year high schools in Georgia can participate in the musical theater program sponsored by ArtsBridge Foundation. This year, 75 schools representing 28 Georgia counties opened their programs up to an expert panel of judges. The judges visited each school and ranked their performances in 17 different categories, from lead actor and actress to costume and set design, and everything in-between. An accounting firm tabulates the scores and on April 20, the participating schools as well as the public are invited to the Shuler Awards, a Tony-esque awards presentation, at the Cobb Energy Center.

The Ninth Annual Shuler Awards program is already sold out, but GPB will air the awards show live, from 7 to 9 p.m. Schools winning Overall Production accolades will perform, in addition to medleys by Lead Actors and Actresses, and even Shuler Hensley, the Awards’ namesake and Tony Award winner.

Barrow said that schools in Georgia often proudly display the many football trophies won over the years, and now Shuler Awards are shown with equal pride. She also said that schools are judged not against each other, due to a wide range of resources, but by what they are able to do with their resources.
