On this week’s Around Atlanta edition of the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio show, co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick are joined by John Welker to discuss Atlanta Ballet’s holiday production of the Nutcracker at the Fox Theatre.

John Welker is a long-time performer with the troupe, having served 22 years with the Atlanta Ballet, the country’s longest-running classical ballet company. The Nutcracker recently premiered on December 9 and will run 19 shows until it closes on December 24.

According to Welker, The Nutcracker inspired him to initially get involved in ballet.

“When you’re up there performing in front of 2,000 people, it’s just magical,” said Welker. “I know there are children in the audience sharing a similar experience that I had and that makes it even more special.”

The range of ages on the stage allows for a more diverse cast that can connect with audiences of all ages.

The younger cast members began rehearsals for The Nutcracker in September, while full-cast production began only about three weeks before opening night. Because of its familiarity, production length was less than the typical, full-scale show that is usually about six weeks.

This year, Welker will perform in three roles: Drosselmeyer, Cavalier and Snow King. Additionally, this year’s Nutcracker performance at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre will feature a variety of first-time effects including snowing on the stage as well as over the audience.

Closing night of The Nutcracker will serve as Welker’s last performance with the Atlanta Ballet as he heads into retirement.

“It’s a bittersweet moment and The Nutcracker is an excellent show to hang my hat on,” said Welker.
