The fifth annual Bikes, Barks and Bar-B-Q event, Canine Pet Rescue’s largest fundraiser, is featured on this week’s Around Atlanta edition of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. Carla Brown, CEO and Founder of Canine Pet Rescue, is on hand to discuss the event, which is being held Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
The event starts with the bike ride, which has become the Trey Phillips Memorial Ride in honor of a local attorney who was killed on a motorcycle. The ride beings at the Gwinnett County Detention Center in Lawrenceville, travels to Rutledge and returns to Big Sky Farm in Dacula around noon. Then, fun for the whole family begins with delicious bar-b-q, dog demonstrations, music, vendors and much more. Not only is this event fun for the whole family, but you can bring your dog, too!

As the largest fundraiser for Canine Pet Rescue, nearly 25 percent of the yearly income is derived from this event. A not-for-profit organization, Canine Pet Rescue takes donations of any amount, as well as sponsors for the event.
Money raised during the Bikes, Barks and Bar-B-Q event largely goes to vet bills, as nearly 50 percent of the group’s money is used to care for the dogs. Most of the dogs haven’t received excellent healthcare prior to winding up on the farm, and this means Canine Pet Rescue must spend a significant amount of money returning them to good health. In addition, the rescue group has a senior dog program that offers those who adopt older dogs free vet care and supplements. Other costs include the food and daily care needed by the 15 German Shepherds that are typically at the rescue at any given time.
For those who wish to give to Canine Pet Rescue with their time instead of money, there are a number of volunteer opportunities available. The entire staff works on a volunteer basis, and there is typically eight hours of work to be done at the kennel a day. Volunteer opportunities include everything from playing with the dogs or cleaning up after them to entering data or marketing upcoming events. If you let Canine Pet Rescue know you’d like to volunteer, they’ll find a place for you!
For those interested in adopting a German Shepherd from Canine Pet Rescue, Carla recommends putting in an application early. Candidates must go through an approval process, and once it’s complete, they can come to the farm and meet the dogs that are a good match. Carla cautions that it can be a lengthy process, because while there are always dogs on the farm, the perfect dog for you may not have arrived yet.
