Today’s Around Atlanta guest, Anne-Marie Anderson, is on hand to discuss an egg-citing event taking place this month in Atlanta! As the chair of the 2015 Urban Coop Tour, which benefits the Wlyde Center, Anderson is on the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio Show to discuss the growing trend of urban coops and the tour that shows them off.

The Wylde Center’s mission of promoting open green spaces, organic gardening, healthy eating and general environmental stewardship pairs perfectly with the tour, which provides an easy and fun way for community members to learn about having chickens in the city.

Set up much like a garden tour, the Urban Coop Tour will showcase 13 public and private coops across the Southeast side of Atlanta from Grant Park to Decatur. The tour is designed to show people how easy it is to have chickens in the city, as well as all of the good things that come from them, such as fresh eggs and compost for the garden.

The health benefits provided by chickens are one of the primary reasons they’ve become so popular for city dwellers. It’s hard to get more local or sustainable than eating fresh eggs produced in your own backyard. In addition, you can get rid of a great deal of organic waste produced in the kitchen by giving it to chickens.

All 13 coops on this year’s tour are unique, showing that there are many different ways to keep chickens in the city. Designs range from an egg-shaped coop to a green coop that grows food on the roof. Many coops also feature artwork and other animals, including bees and rabbits.

Tour attendees will have the opportunity to not only view various types of coops, but they can also learn more about starting their own chicken coop from the coop owners. In addition, the tour is a great way for families to start a conversation about where food comes from with their children.

The 8th Annual Coop Tour is being held Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29 from noon until 5 p.m. Early bird tickets can be purchased online for $20, or they can be purchased on tour weekend for $25. Children age 12 and under are free. Tickets are valid for both days of the tour, and they also include admission to the Launch Party held Friday, March 27 from 6 until 7:30 p.m.
