Looking for a way to spruce up your Atlanta home this spring, but want to do so without breaking the bank? One way to get your home looking new without the “new” price tags, is with second-hand shopping.

Top designers are always singing the praises of second-hand finds and how they can add a one-of-a-kind touch to a space, and now is the best time for bargain hunting, as families look to declutter this time of year by donating or consigning their gently used belongings or by having garage/yard sales.

Many of us are a little squeamish at first about using someone else’s things, but get over it! Everything (just about) can be washed, cleaned, disinfected and made perfect for its new owner.

The Equifax Finance Blog gives some tips on savvy second-hand shopping in one of its newest blog posts,

“Shop Second-Hand Stores and Garage Sales Like a Pro.”

Here are just a few:

  • Shop often and keep an open mind – Chances are you won’t find exactly what you’re looking for on your first trip. Eventually though, the more often you go though, you will find what you need.
  • Keep a running list – of picture sizes (for frames), window sizes (for curtains), etc.
  • Stick to a budget – it can be easy to go overboard when you feel like you’re getting a bargain; so, the article recommends taking cash and only spending that.
  • Know your stores – over time you’ll learn which stores have the best inventories and when; inventories will vary across Atlanta neighborhoods, and if you’re a frequent enough shopper, you’ll likely meet the shop employees who can let you know when specific items that might interest you come in.
