You’re in the City of Atlanta; it’s hot and you’re wearing your best looking, but most uncomfortable pair of shoes. You have a power lunch meeting in 30 minutes. You could take a taxi to the restaurant, but that seems like a waste of money and it’s not as eco-friendly as walking. However, if you walk, you risk showing up to meet your boss out of breath and dripping with sweat. What do you do?

Well, if Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall’s vision becomes a reality, you won’t be walking and you won’t be hailing a traditional taxi; instead, you’ll be flagging down a rickshaw to pedal you to your destination.

Already utilized in Decatur and Marietta, these human-powered pedicabs will be used to convey Atlanta tourists and residents on quick rides around the city core to restaurants, meetings and on sightseeing tours. That is, if the legislation that Hall has sent to the city legal department is crafted into a law that permits and regulates pedicabs.

As unusual as this may seem to some, Atlanta is no stranger to pedicabs. This eco-friendly, alternate mode of transportation first appeared in the city in the 1990s. However, pedicabs soon received resistance from the city council and the taxi industry that says most of the downtown taxi business is from short rides; the same fares that pedicabs will be competing for.

Atlanta Real Estate Forum first learned about Rickshaws coming to Atlanta from an Atlanta Journal-Constitution article. Hopefully we will have updates soon. What do you think of Rickshaws? Would you rather walk, bike, rickshaw or Cab it downtown?
