Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh & Associates (TSW), an Atlanta-based full-service planning, architecture and landscape architecture firm, is pleased to announce that three of its projects have received awards from the Atlanta Regional Commission. The awards recognized work the firm has done in historic redevelopment, community planning and community revitalization and design, and were announced at the ARC’s November State of the Region Breakfast.

White Provision, a mixed-use redevelopment of an historic meat packing building on Atlanta’s Westside, received the 2010 Development of Excellence Award from the Atlanta Chapter of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), and Development of Excellence Award from the Atlanta Regional Commission. TSW was responsible for project site work, which included grading and new utilities, storm water detention, vehicular and pedestrian circulation and landscape design. A key challenge for the TSW team was accommodating vehicular traffic, while creating an appealing pedestrian environment.

The City of Hapeville received the Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) Achievement Award from the Atlanta Regional Commission for its Main Street Town Center LCI Study. TSW was the lead planning and design firm for the project and has completed several implementation projects resulting from the study’s recommendations. The study covers revisions to City Code, planning initiatives and capital improvement projects, including streetscapes, pedestrian trails, sidewalks and utilities.

Mechanicsville, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Atlanta, was awarded the Exceptional Merit for Comprehensive Community Revitalization and Design. TSW created the Master Plan for the McDaniel Glenn development, a mixed-use, mixed-income extension of the historic Mechanicsville neighborhood. The neighborhood began in the late 1800s adjacent to several railroad lines just south of downtown and was named for the mechanics that worked on the lines. The community declined following the construction of Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and Interstates I-20 and I-75/85. Today, the City of Atlanta has targeted the area for revitalization. The new Master Plan calls for 203 townhouses and single-family homes, approximately 1,000 multi-family units and nearly 20,000 square feet of commercial space at ground level. In addition, TSW designed new parks and new streets, along with traffic-calming measures to allow children to play safely and to encourage people to walk and bicycle throughout the community.
