new year's resolutions

Showcasing the best of Metro Atlanta, the Around Atlanta segment is back in 2018 to bring Atlantans information on the best things to do and the special events that make Atlanta great. Since it’s the beginning of the new year, co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick have teamed up with several Atlanta locals who are there to help guide Atlantans through the process of keeping their New Year’s resolutions, whether those are personal, financial or fitness-related. Today’s Around Atlanta segment features Susan Delmonico, a personal trainer with SJD Health and Fitness.

Based out of Cartersville, Susan makes it a goal to meet with her clients and tailor health and fitness plans to what they want, instead of offering generic gym services. A lot of clients set unrealistic expectations when they begin New Year’s resolutions, she says, and she often advises people aiming to lose weight or become stronger to set realistic goals that can be measured, instead of vaguely saying, “I’m going to lose 150 pounds,” or “I’m going to go to the gym more often.” She also frequently sees clients that begin a fitness journey without a “why” in mind. Instead of only focusing on the “what,” which can often falter when the workouts become more frequent and more difficult, Susan says people who want to get in shape should have a reason for wanting to work out or lose weight. Being more active, feeling healthier and enjoying everyday life more can all be sufficient “whys.”

Susan coaches a wide range of clients whose ages range from 11 to 75 and include men and women. Some of her clients are solely focused on getting stronger, while others would like to lose significant weight. Some have been active all their lives and others have never been very athletic. Some will enjoy running to get in shape, while others prefer different methods of cardio.

She encourages people to celebrate little successes throughout the entire year. New Year’s resolutions last through the whole year and not until the first time a client becomes discouraged. Instead of being disappointed with no instant weight loss or a getting to the gym more frequently, but slowly, she urges clients to celebrate each step taken in the right direction.

Susan also warns clients to keep in mind that the number on the scale is just a number, and that diets should be considered “lifestyle changes” and not diets. The journey to getting in shape is as much a mental battle as it is physical and her goal is to get her clients on the right path to changing their lifestyles and feeling better.
