Most of us have summer traditions; things we simply have to do in order to really celebrate the lazy long days of the season. Around Atlanta, one of these traditions is the Decatur BBQ, Blues and Bluegrass Festival, now in its 17th year. On today’s Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, festival director Michael Vajda joins co-hosts Mandy Holm and Todd Schnick to talk about the lip-smacking food and great music that comprise the festival.

In 2000, Decatur learned that either the train depot needed to be moved farther away from the train tracks or be demolished. In an effort to preserve the depot, the Decatur Preservation Alliance “threw a party to raise some money,” Vajda says, and they moved the depot away from the tracks. The building, which dates back to 1891, now houses Kimball House restaurant.

Having achieved their goal, and having thoroughly enjoyed hosting a music and food festival, the festival shifted focus. The current beneficiary of the festival is the Community Center of Decatur, which is in the Historic Scottish Rite complex. Vajda says the festival supports the maintenance of the Solarium and also provides grant funds to community charities in Decatur.

On August 12, from 2:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., guests can hear music from eight bands spanning blues, bluegrass and country genres on three separate stages at Harmony Park. In addition, participants can sample barbeque from three different area BBQ joints, Sweet Auburn, Fox Brothers and Williamson Brothers. Vegetarian options and cold beer from New Belgium will also be available. Vajda says a kids area and kid-friendly beverages make the event perfect for families who want to sample some good tunes and good food while contributing to the Decatur community.
