Women in Restaurants, an organization dedicated to empowering women in the culinary world, recently hosted a working farm day at Comfort Farms. Attendees experienced a day full of learning, connection and fun. Sponsored by Nana’s Chicken-N-Waffles and terra alma, this event offered members a chance to learn planting and harvesting techniques while actively participating in gardening by repotting seedlings.
“Digging in the dirt is far more than a simple act of gardening; it’s a profound connection to the Earth that nourishes both our bodies and souls,” wrote Edie Weintraub, co-founder of Women in Restaurants and President of terra alma. “This seemingly mundane task is imbued with the power to heal, connect, and educate us on the intricate web of life that sustains our existence.”
Located in Milledgeville, Georgia, Comfort Farms was founded by Army veteran Jon Jackson in 2014 as the first project of his nonprofit Stag Vets. Inc. Comfort Farms grows heirloom vegetables and raises heritage turkeys, hogs, hens, rabbits and fish to help veterans heal after their service.
Farmer Jackson spoke to the Women in Restaurants group about his Stag Vets veteran program, raising heirloom vegetables and pigs and ways to promote awareness of where one’s food comes from. He and Laurel Elliott cooked a delicious dinner for attendees with crops and food products from his farm.
Nana’s Chicken-N-Waffles and terra alma provided snacks and drinks for attendees throughout the event, nurturing the engaging time of group fellowship and education.
