Trout Unlimited is a cold water conservation organization with a mission of enhancing, creating, maintaining and protecting cold, clean, drinkable and fishable water. The organization works diligently to maintain cold water ecosystems and has enlisted the help of the youth of today with multiple programs.

“As our population grows we see more and more issues that crop up in our water sheds and environment,” said Westmoreland. “Mr. Tumlin and myself are not as young as we used to be, so getting the youth of America involved is going to be our future. It’s up to them to run this thing down the road.”

Trout Unlimited Youth practice fly fishingA program in which Trout Unlimited has seen great success is its Trout in the Classroom program. Students work with trout eggs over the course of a school year, keeping them in chillers and observing the growing process while keeping journals, doing chemical tests on the water and eventually releasing them in the spring. The program has had profound impacts on students.

“When they get to see a creature develop from a fertilized egg into an adult I think they understand the problem in trying to keep a cold water species that needs very clean, high oxygen levels of water alive,” said Westmoreland. “It instills a need in them to look after our water systems and our environment that flows into our water systems.”

The Trout Umlimited Costa 5 Rivers program started in 2011 with the goal of keeping young people engaged in fly-fishing as they enter adulthood. The program began at North Paulding High School and has since expanded to 100 college across the nation.
