Tis the season to be merry, and Atlanta is busting out the merry making with tons of winter and holiday fun. From ice skating and holiday light displays to traditional Santa meet and greets and Christmas tree farms, there are unlimited ways to fill your days with holiday cheer. On today’s Around Atlanta episode, Co-founder of 365 Atlanta Traveler, Sue Rodman joins us to talk about the hidden winter wonderland gems in Atlanta and even sheds some light on unique weekend getaways.
365 Atlanta Traveler is an award-winning travel blog with nearly half-a-million monthly readers. This incredible site was created so that Atlantans could easily find a variety of destinations, attractions restaurants and more in the city. The travel site also focuses on unique places for weekend getaways, whether in Georgia or neighboring states. During the interview Rodman mentions popular destinations such as Ellijay, Milledgeville and Thomasville, plus other hidden gems not only in Atlanta but in the state of Georgia.
Over holiday school break, a common complaint heard from children is, “we’re bored, there’s nothing to do!” Rodman has three suggestions that will keep kids entertained and have your family prepared for the holiday season. Her first suggestion is to go to The Christmas Tree Farm at Yule Forest where your family came cut down your very own tree for the season. She then suggests visiting Santa, and not just at the mall. Atlanta is known for its diversity and Santa Clause is no exception! Children can visit Santa in a green suite at the Botanical Gardens, catch Santa hard at work at The Rock Ranch, watch Santa scuba dive at The Georgia Aquarium or have an ugly sweater party with Santa at The Fernbank Museum. To really add a seasonal favorite to the mix, she suggests taking the kids to Ponce City Market where the Grinch lives for the season!
Visiting Santa is a traditional activity around Atlanta but playing in the snow is definitely a treat we only get once a year (sometimes). When out-of-towners visit for the holidays, they want to get out and really experience Atlanta. A fun activity for all is finding snow! To see a snow show every night, visit Atlantic station and travel back to Europe at the German market. To actually play in the snow Stone Mountain and Lake Lanier Islands offer tons of snow activities from tubing to snowball fights.
Rodman talks about the activities for kids and out-of-towners, but she doesn’t forget the couples who want a night out in the city. “When I go on a date night, I want to be active,” she states. “Atlanta has tones of ice-skating rink, each with their own personality so that you can find the atmosphere you desire.” She describes a few popular spots around town, Atlantic Station makes you feel like you’re at the Rockefeller Center because of all the tall buildings, St. Regis is more intimate with a real ginger bread house and couples can visit Atlas afterwards for a drink and museum tour, Park Tavern at Piedmont Park offers lots of firepits for a cozy setting and Ponce City Market now offers igloos for rent.
