For over 41 years, the Chattahoochee Nature Center has been a waterfront oasis in the middle of Atlanta’s urban jungle. On today’s Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, Lynn McIntryre from the Center joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick to share about summer events on the Chattahoochee.
Spread over 127 acres, the Chattahoochee Nature Center is a sprawling natural classroom with a museum and event center. Because it hugs the shoreline of the river, guests can hike along the water, hop in a canoe for a guided tour or enjoy the “beautiful gardens.” McIntyre says guests come to forget about the hectic pace of life inside the city.
Over the summer, members and guests can attend a variety of additional events to take full advantage of the center. Though the 18th annual butterfly festival has passed, the butterfly encounter is open until the end of July. McIntyre says people come from out of state to spend the day with butterflies, and children arrive dressed with costume wings in bright colors, hoping to attract a butterfly to land on them. She says in addition to its beauty, the encounter educates visitors about the importance of pollinators. As part of the exhibit, a local photographer teaches a nature photography class so that amateurs can hone their nature photography skills.
The event center along the river provides a wonderful venue for events like Sunday on the River, which is on the second Sunday of summer months, and features musicians in an intimate setting. Guests bring a picnic and can purchase beer and wine. “Once everyone chills out,” the birds and frogs start to sing along, McIntyre says.
Coming up on Father’s Day, McIntyre suggests booking a private, guided canoe tour of the river and its environs as a unique gift for Dad. The Center also gives dads free admission on Father’s Day, and there is a canoe trip on that day. Call for availability.
