Co-hosts Todd Schnick and Carol Morgan are joined by Dustin Bixby, Vice President of Marketing and Promotions for Atlanta Motor Speedway, to talk about all of the fun events that take place year-round at the track. The speedway is perhaps best known for hosting a NASCAR race every year. The track hosted its first race in 1960, and now it is home to the second race of the season each year. The 2019 Atlanta race will take place the weekend of February 22 through 24, with attendees coming in to camp at the track as far as a week in advance! Race weekend features more than just a race, though – it’s a full weekend of fun and activities for fans.
One of the popular options is the pre-race pit pass, which allows fans to get into the pits and garage and take a behind-the-scenes look at what teams are doing to prepare for the race. These passes offer a unique glimpse into this evolving sport that has more science, technology, engineering and data crunching than most people ever know. And, it shows how racing has become a true team sport.
While the NASCAR race is the big-ticket event for most people, there are plenty of other racing opportunities to enjoy. A grassroots-style short track series happens every summer. This Thursday Thunder presented by Papa Johns Pizza series features Legends and Bandolero racing and is underway now.
Bixby says one of the questions he receives most often is, “how can I drive the track?” At O’Reilly Auto Parts Friday Night Drags, fans can do just that! Before the drag racing starts, any person with any automobile can drive their car around the track! Afterward, for a real taste of racing, attendees can even try their hand at drag racing down the pit lanes.
Yet another opportunity for driving the track is through the racing schools, including the Richard Petty Driving Experience and NASCAR Driving Experience. These opportunities are available on weekends throughout the year when other events aren’t taking place, and they allow attendees to get behind the wheel of a stock car (or ride with a professional if they’re not comfortable driving). Thrill seekers will enjoy the experience of a lifetime as they speed up to 175 miles-per-hour around the track in the ride-along experience!
Atlanta Motor Speedway is more than just a racetrack. As one of the largest venues south of the city, it’s home to an abundance of special events year-round. It’s also a great facility to rent out for special occasions of all kind, from corporate retreats and networking events to races and formal events. A sampling of other annual events held at the speedway include:
- Imagine Festival, a three-day EDM festival with on-site camping that takes place in September
- Atlanta Air Show, held every fall inside the world’s only “aerial stadium,” featuring the U.S. Air Force F-33 Raptor Demo Team, among others
- Tiny House Festival
- Atlanta Barbeque Classic, a two-day contest featuring top barbeque connoisseurs
- Multiple corporate events and outings
