Curb appeal starts with a manicured lawn, and Pike Nurseries is here to make the process less overwhelming. This Around Atlanta edition, Melodie McDanal, horticulturist with Pike Nurseries, joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick on Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio to discuss an upcoming free class and tips on helping your lawn to survive the winter months.

Founded by Pete Pike in 1958 in Marietta, Georgia, Pike Nurseries is a garden center offering expert landscape installation and design services, a planting service, a growing facility called Pike Nurseries Farm and a variety of free garden classes for the green thumbs out there.

McDanal shares some of her favorite preventative lawn care tips:

  • Pike Crabgrass Preventer stops crabgrass before it starts. Apply Crabgrass Preventer before the seeds have time to germinate.
  • Re-sod or re-seed fescue grass, a common grass in Georgia. This grass does not like the heat and requires frequent watering, but will stay green even through winter months, just overseed each spring.

Not sure what type of grass is on your lawn? Pike experts can easily identify grass types and possible weed issues; simply bring a sample in to a nursery. Each grass type calls for a specific care regimen and Pike can tell you when your specific grass should be fertilized, treated with an herbicide and more.

Classes are an excellent way to dip a toe into the gardening specialty, or to simply learn something new. Pike Nurseries will host a special “make-and-take” class at all locations on Saturday, February 9 at 9 a.m. Participants will create a terrarium and take it home with them. Walk-ins are welcome, but to guarantee your spot for the free class, call your preferred location in advance.

Listen to the above interview for additional tips and tricks on treating your lawn in all seasons. For additional information and inspiration, or to locate your nearest Pike Nursery, visit PikeNursery.com.
