The National Association of Home Builders celebrates June as National Homeownership Month in recognition of the fact that being a homeowner has long been the foundation of the American dream. Owning a home provides more than just shelter for your family and a home for your most valued treasures. For generations of Americans, owning your own home has also meant owning your future.

Owning a home means that you are able to provide for your children’s education, for your own retirement and for a sense of pride and stability.

Each June, Americans have the chance to reflect on how homeownership has enhanced our lives and contributed to the thriving communities we call home. Builders across the country continue to work with housing finance innovators, consumer education organizations and government officials to advance and protect affordable homeownership opportunities in order to help families achieve their American dream.

Many organizations outside of the housing industry also participate in National Homeownership Month in hopes of being able to provide housing to more Americans.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) celebrates by “Bringing Rural America Home,” and renewing their commitment to providing safe, affordable housing in small towns and rural communities.
The USDA believes that when families can find a good place to live in rural America, they will stay there, invest in their community and help to create new economic growth.

The National Foundation for Credit Counseling, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Housing Counseling Intermediaries, uses this month to help people recognize that there are opportunities to achieve sustainable homeownership through access to professional housing counseling and homebuyer education.

One of the biggest lessons learned during the recovery process from the housing crisis is that financial education is key to being a successful homeowner. During National Homeownership Month, take the time to make sure you are educated about the types of mortgages that are available to you, and that you are fully aware of the financial responsibility you are undertaking when you purchase a home.
