Macy's Tree Lighting

In all the craziness this year has brought, it is the small things like holiday traditions that bring us together to provide joy. Of course, there is no better event in Atlanta to do just that than the annual Macy’s Great Tree Lighting. The event recently kicked off its 73rd annual lighting with a new twist on the celebration to ensure safety for all.

Dating back to 1948, the Macy’s Great Tree Lighting is a beloved tradition that continuously draws in huge crowds of individuals looking to welcome the holiday season with bright lights, live musical guests and other festive event activities. In an effort to keep everyone safe, this year’s event featured a private, invite-only celebration featuring Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, as well as numerous young patients from the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

While the 45,000 glimmering lights and shiny star atop the Macy’s tree may be bright, there is nothing brighter than the inspirational story behind the brave little girl who lit it. Kenni Daley, 3-years-old, was diagnosed by doctors with a rare form of ovarian cancer. With the help from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Kenni is now officially cancer-free. With the simple push of a button, the tiny cancer survivor illuminated the 56-foot tall, eco-friendly tree to light up Atlanta for the holiday season.

Despite the Great Tree Lighting not being open to the public this year, the stunning Christmas tree can still be viewed sitting atop the Macy’s at Lenox Square for Atlanta holiday shoppers to enjoy through New Year’s Day. While in the city, be sure to stop by Lenox Square, admire the beautiful lights and consider the ways you can give back this holiday season.
