A worldwide musical phenomenon, Jesus Christ Superstar is coming to Atlanta after a critically acclaimed run in the United Kingdom. The reimagined 50th-anniversary tour includes performances at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta from April 19 to 24, 2022 during the 40th anniversary Broadway in Atlanta season.
Set during the final weeks of the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas, the legendary rock-inspired musical features hits such as ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him,’ ‘Gethsemane’ and ‘Superstar.’
Led by acclaimed director Timothy Sheader and cutting-edge choreographer Drew McOnie, the North American production features music and lyrics by Emmy, Oscar, GRAMMY and Tony winners Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Rounding out the creative team is set and costume design by 2016 Tony Award nominee Tom Scutt, music supervision by Tom Deering and North American music supervisor David Holcenberg, lighting design by Lee Curransound and design by Keith Caggiano and Nick Lidster.
Aaron LaVigne leads the show as Jesus, joined by Omar Lopez-Cepero as Judas and Jenna Rubaii as Mary. The tour also features Alvin Crawford as Caiphas, Tommy Sherlock as Pilate, and Tyce Green as Annas. Pepe Nufrio returns to the tour as the standby for Jesus and Judas.
In 2018, over 9.6 million viewers tuned in to the NBC broadcast of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. The broadcast earned the highest ratings in its time and the highest critical ranking of any live musical event on network television. The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre Production of Jesus Christ Superstar won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, selling out two consecutive engagements during the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
In September 2021, remastered versions of the score recorded at Abbey Road were released to the public to incredible praise, celebrating the success of the 1970 musical sensation. The North American tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, produced by Work Light Productions and Stephen Gabriel, will have traveled to more than 50 cities during its three-year run.
Tickets for the production go on sale to the public on December 10 and can be purchased on the Fox Theatre website. To celebrate 40 years of Broadway in Atlanta, a select number of $40 tickets will be sold at each show. Follow along on Facebook and Twitter for show updates and information.
