What’s my favorite part about Cinco de Mayo? COLOR! Mexico is known for its bold use of color; they use it in clothing, banners, decorations and buildings (both inside and out)! Elegant rooms are alive with colorfully-painted walls, often with wainscots in contrasting hues, accented with old-world stencil patterns. Rich colors also adorn hacienda architectural elements, including grand-scale doors, ceiling beams and sculptural stove hoods.
In the United States, we often tread lightly when it comes to paint colors in our Atlanta home designs. Beige, white, cream, taupe, bone, ivory….we have so many ways to describe colors that are ever-so-slightly off white. This year, maybe we should take some advice from our Southern neighbor. Color has the ability to really change our moods for the better, and painting is such an easy and cost effective design change. If you want to add some bold color to your home, but don’t know where to start, take a look at designer couple Joe and Karen Witynski Carr’s work. They have spent more than 25 years traveling in and studying Mexico and its exquisitely bold designs. I highly recommend reading one of their many books, Hacienda Style; you will see incredible examples of color done right in Hacienda style homes!
In fact, PPG Porter Paints loves Hacienda colors so much, that they worked with Karen Witinski Carr to create the Hacienda Style Color Collection! This means that you can now have authentic Hacienda colors in your own home. Browse the colors on our website at www.voiceofcolor.com/collections/hacienda-style, and REALLY celebrate Cinco de Mayo with color this year!
