HomeAid Atlanta Care Day Volunteer Group

On November 18, 2020, HomeAid Atlanta organized several of its loyal volunteers to participate in a Care Day at Ascensa Health at St. Jude’s Recovery Center for Women and Children. HomeAid Care Days are volunteer workdays that focus on providing free-of-charge maintenance and repairs for nonprofit organizations that serve the homeless population.

Ascensa Health at St. Jude’s Recovery Center for Women and Children is an organization that provides residential treatment to patients and strives to keep family units together during the process. Through this organization, mothers are also able to receive an array of specialized services, including intensive addiction and mental health treatment, family reunification services, parenting education, basic living skills and employment services. Each one of these comprehensive services aims to reinforce self-sufficiency in these mothers with children of all ages.

Several volunteers representing McMichael and Gray, PC; Timberlake Cabinetry; Kennesaw State University’s NAHB Student Chapter, The Northview Church, and the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association worked together to haul and rake mulch. Their efforts helped to transform a playground for the facility’s younger residents. In addition to providing this play space for children, the group of volunteers also completed several landscaping projects around the extensive grounds.

“There are no words to thank each of you for your true “labor” of love,” said Suzanne Shaffer, President and CEO of Ascensa Health, to HomeAid’s volunteers. “The mound of mulch appeared challenging to conquer with ten wheelbarrows. HomeAid volunteers jumped right in, and for six hours hauled the mulch to improve the playground and landscaping. This act of kindness means so much to our mothers and children.  This is home while they are in our care.  Our children have experienced difficulty at a young age and playgrounds equal happiness! We are so grateful that you spent your day refreshing our playground and landscape.”

KSU NAHB Volunteers

Crabapple Landscapexperts was another integral partner in this HomeAid Atlanta Care Day. This organization donated and delivered all of the mulch for this project. In conjunction with the other volunteers, Crabapple Landscapexperts helped Ascensa Health at St. Jude’s Recovery Center for Women and Children save over $4,500. With these savings, Ascensa Health at St. Jude’s Recovery Center for Women and Children is able to put more funds towards helping its clients.
