Spring is a celebratory season with graduations, proms, weddings and more. During all of these happy occasions, it can be easy to forget the underserved of Atlanta. Joining co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick on today’s Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, Jean Hilyard of HomeAid Atlanta shares how we can support those working their way out of homelessness.

HomeAid Atlanta is one of 17 nationwide chapters of an agency that builds homes and new lives for those with nowhere to live. In the past, Hilyard says, HomeAid Atlanta has worked primarily on physically building homes, but recently they have added outreach to their mission. HomeAid collects items throughout the year and distributes them to service providers in the area who work with homeless people.

The Essentials Drive is geared toward collecting just that – necessary items for infants and toddlers who are serviced by one of many providers in the Atlanta area. These agencies, like Action Ministries, the Salvation Army, Home Stretch and more, help these children and their parents acquire housing that is more permanent. Each of the partners makes requests of specific items so they are sure to get what they need.

This year, HomeAid Atlanta is collecting diapers, baby wipes, baby food and baby formula during the essentials drive. While it may seem more fun to donate cute baby clothes and new toys, these agencies are in desperate need of these essential items. Hilyard explains that donations can be brought to one of the many donation locations throughout the area, and those sites can be found at HomeAid Atlanta’s website. In addition, cash donations can be made through this site. For those who prefer to shop online, the organization has baby registries at Amazon and Target.

Donations can be delivered to collection stations through May 10. The next day, a group of volunteers will sort through the items, about $40,000 worth of goods, which is a significant gift to each of the service groups. UPS will arrive with two trucks and four employees to help make the deliveries throughout the area. HomeAid Atlanta ensures that these deliveries are made in time to celebrate Mother’s Day.

To donate, deliver or volunteer, listen to today’s segment and visit HomeAid Atlanta’s website for more information on the Essentials Drive.
