Mandy Crater with HomeAid Atlanta Essential Drive

Executive Director of HomeAid Atlanta Mandy Crater is in the studio for today’s Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. Joined by co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick, the group discusses their annual Essentials Drive, 20th anniversary, upcoming projects and more.

HomeAid Atlanta’s mission is to build new lives for families and individuals experiencing homelessness in the metro Atlanta area.  In its efforts to build lives for those experiencing homelessness, HomeAid builds, renovates and maintains facilities for organizations that provide shelter and programs for the homeless population in Atlanta.

“A good portion of the people experiencing homelessness in metro Atlanta, which on any given night could be 5,500 people, are women and children, or about 40%,” said Crater. “There are a lot of people out there who need our help and we’re actually concerned, that on the tail end of the pandemic, it might get worse.

To help these people in need, HomeAid Atlanta is hosting its 20th Annual Essentials Drive. Taking place from April 1 to May 5, 2021, the fundraiser is HomeAid’s annual community-wide drive held to collect “essentials” for families with infants and toddlers who are experiencing homelessness. Essential items include diapers, baby wipes and more. Since 2002, HomeAid Atlanta’s Essentials Drive has collected over 1,350,000 essential baby items, assisting hundreds of moms and babies in the metro Atlanta area.

Diapers and wipes are not only extremely expensive for families in need but are also hard to come by through assisted programs. No state or federal child safety-net program allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers. With babies needing changing up to 12 times a day, the estimated cost for diapers is $70 to $80 a month per infant. The annual Essentials Drive helps to gather up these necessary items and provide them to women and children who are experiencing homelessness in Atlanta.

This April, HomeAid Atlanta invites you to help metro Atlanta mothers and children by joining the 20th Annual Essentials Drive. There are many ways to get involved:

  • Host an Essentials Drive drop-off site at your place of business (open to the public)
  • Coordinate a drive among your friends and coworkers at your office, church, school, or civic organization
  • Donate unopened packages of diapers and wipes in person or online via HomeAid registries at Target and Amazon
  • Donate gift cards
  • Volunteer to sort, count, and pack donations
  • Sponsor the Essentials Drive

In addition to the ongoing Essentials Drive this April and May, HomeAid Atlanta is also excited to celebrate its 20th anniversary! To help commemorate this milestone year, the organization is hosting a big party at Brand Vaughn Lumber. This is a spacious 3,300 square foot-warehouse with big roll-up doors to allow for plenty of airflow and proper social distancing. There will be a band, food and drinks to help celebrate the organization and the thousands of lives improved by the impactful nonprofit organization.
