Families looking for fall activities need look no further than Oakland Cemetery near Grant Park in Atlanta. On September 30, Historic Oakland Foundation will welcome visitors to its 40th annual Sunday in the Park festival, a free event that celebrates the local communities that make Oakland what it is today and explores how historic Oakland Cemetery, surrounding neighborhoods, and the city of Atlanta have changed over time.

From noon to 6 p.m., Sunday in the Park attendees will find activities for all ages and interests, including living history theatre performances, cemetery tours, food trucks, live music, storytelling, a kids’ zone, a historical costume contest, and more. Bands and dancers will perform throughout the day. The event also includes a market featuring one-of-a-kind wares from local artists.

“The stories in Oakland Cemetery are the stories of all of Atlanta. Our Sunday in the Park fall festival allows visitors to learn about where we’ve come from with an eye to where we’re going,“ said Richard Harker, Director of Programming and Volunteers at Historic Oakland Foundation. “Visitors to Oakland during Sunday in the Park will continue the Victorian tradition of using a cemetery as a place of leisure and will enjoy a fun-filled day in the park.”

Oakland Cemetery’s fall event season begins with its Fall Plant Sale, held Sept. 28 and 29. After Sunday in the Park, the cemetery hosts its 10th annual Run Like Hell 5K on October 13, followed by two weekends of the acclaimed Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween Tours, which sold out in July.

“Historic Oakland Foundation’s mission is to preserve and share Oakland Cemetery in partnership with the City of Atlanta. When the Cemetery is in autumnal bloom, we showcase these beautiful 48-acres with programming designed to appeal to everyone, especially families,” said David Moore, Executive Director of Historic Oakland Foundation.

Thirty percent of historic Oakland Cemetery has been restored in the Foundation’s forty-year history. Proceeds from Sunday in the Park and other fall events benefit the people of Atlanta by allowing the Foundation to continue its preservation efforts.
