Georgia Military Women

Dr. Amy Stevens, a licensed professional counselor with Georgia Military Women and a member of the board of Vetlanta, is in studio for today’s Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. Joined by co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick, Stevens participated in this Around Atlanta segment of Radio to discuss her motivation for starting the group, how the group helps veterans and ways to get involved.

Georgia Military Women

Stevens is a proud Navy veteran with 11 years of active duty experience and four years in the reserve. After she received a medical discharge, Stevens went to work for the U.S. Department of Labor. She retired from her position with the Department of Labor and then became the director of psychological health for the National Guard. Stevens held this position from 2009 to 2012. This position was especially important because it was during the time when several deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan occurred.

“It really connected me back to the military community, which I kind of walked away from as many women will do,” said Stevens. “That is why I started Georgia Military Women online on Facebook in 2012.”

Steven heard many different perspectives and accounts of issues from the members of the National Guard. She realized there were still several problems with the system regarding women, some of which have been problems since the early 1980s. Georgia Military Women was created as an avenue for women to come together in a safe and protected place. The professional and social space is a place for military women to share resources, benefits and support.

Georgia Military Women

Georgia is ranked fifth in the nation for the number of women veterans, with over 80,000 veterans. There are 38,000 women veterans in the Atlanta area alone, about 20,000 of which receive some type of service from the Atlanta Veterans Association. Several of these women have found comfort and support in Georgia Military Women.

Georgia Military Women is composed of several demographics that represent Georgia well. Ages of the veterans spread from women in their 20s to women over 65. The group is also made up of several different ethnicities and backgrounds.
