Right now, June 6 through 14, is National Fishing and Boating Week! To bring awareness to this week, the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation casted a nationwide vote to create a list of the Top 100 Family-Friendly Places to Boat and Fish in the U.S. Landing on this list were four of Georgia’s State Parks, named some of the country’s best family-friendly places to experience the joys of boating and fishing!

Among the Top 100 list are Georgia’s Tugaloo State Park in Lavonia, High Falls State Park near Jackson, Fort Yargo State Park in Winder and Georgia Veterans State Park in Cordele. RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson hopes that this list will encourage families and friends to visit local parks or fishing spots across the U.S., perhaps one of the selected parks on the list, and go spend time together on the water boating or fishing.

There are many ways to celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week. Most states offer Free Fishing Days that allow you to fish without having to purchase a fishing license. In Georgia, the remaining days are June 13 and September 26. Lots of sites across the country will host events or fishing derbies during NFBW that the public is invited to attend as well. The RBFF encourages participants to capture their fishing experiences during the week and share with others online by using #FirstCatch.

Most people are unaware that by purchasing a fishing license and registering a boat they are actually helping to conserve the environment. The money raised is used to conserve natural waterways and fund projects such as habitat improvement, fisheries research, fish stocking, aquatic education and fishing and boating access facilities like docks and boat ramps.
