To celebrate the end of the first week back to school, Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites invites you to have a family fun camping night at Panola Mountain State Park, located on Highway 155 in Stockbridge.

On Friday, August 9, beginning at 6 p.m., join a park ranger for a night of camping at the brand new Scout Lake campground in the park. You will be able to learn backpacking tips, like how to properly pack your bag and the principles of leaving no trace, as well as enjoy other wilderness education programs. Finish the evening’s activities off with a group campfire and s’mores roast.

Panola Mountain State Park, a national heritage area and a National Natural Landmark, features a 100-acre granite outcrop similar to Stone Mountain, but it is smaller and more pristine. Additionally, this park is the highlight of the Arabia Mountain National Heritage area, one of only three national heritage areas in the state. The parks unusual natural beauty and intriguing cultural changes are the basis for this special recognition, and it allows park visitors to see the rock and its rare ecosystem just as Native Americans did centuries ago.

At the park, you will find picnic areas, a playground, Alexander Lake, a paved trail perfect for biking, roller blading, jogging and dog-walking, as well as forested fitness trails that are perfect for hiking and running. There are also archery, birding, geocaching and boat rental programs at Panola Mountain.

Panola Mountain State Park is open daily from 7 a.m. until dusk, and the Nature Center is open from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. daily in the summer and fall.

To attend the family camping night, you must register in advance. The cost is $15 per family and $5 for parking. To register, call 770-389-7801.
