Reports about the metro area’s short supply of new homes came sharply to life for Lisa Maleski and her husband, Bryan, when they went house-hunting last summer.

“We looked at homes by multiple builders, but the inventory for new homes was few and far between,” said Maleski. “We even had trouble finding an existing home – they were snatched up so quickly.”

After happening upon Easthaven in Johns Creek, the couple decided it was worth their time and energy to build a new house. The appeal of the 105-home neighborhood off Johns Creek Parkway came down to three key elements: house plans, builders and schools.

“We have two boys and wanted to move to be in a better school district,” said Maleski. “Johns Creek has one of the best in the area. We were also taken with the floor plan: It’s very open, with a bedroom on the main level and 10-foot ceilings. It flows really well. It’s not cut up but is very functional.”

Working with builders from Ashton Woods made the process of picking every element easier, said Maleski.

“First of all, we found their options were of a much higher standard than others we looked at,” she said. “They had options for things like Silestone counters and screened-in back porches. And everything we asked for we got, from sealing the front porch and pressure washing to a lot of cosmetic details. I can’t say enough good things about Ashton Woods; the customer service was exceptional.”

In late October, the couple and their two boys moved into a 4-bedroom plan with a basement and a screened-in patio. Standard features include stainless steel appliances, kitchen islands, tiled backsplashes, range hoods, hardwood floors, fireplaces and 2-car garages. Master bedrooms have tray ceilings, walk-in closets, soaking tubs and frameless showers. Floor plans range from 3,022 to 3,240 square feet, with prices starting in the mid $400,000s.

Price range: Priced from $454,900

The couple’s home is also a short stroll to the neighborhood pool and cabana. It also offers the proximity to the schools they wanted, and within a few weeks of moving in, a new shopping center opened nearby.

“It’s all worked out, and we really love our home here,” said Maleski.
