the springs at sterling on the lakeDick and Gwen Aldrige, a retired couple from Charlotte, N.C., chose to move to Georgia to be close to their family. They weren’t convinced that they were ready to move to a retirement-only community; instead, they wanted something that offered a better mix of families, empty-nesters and everything in between.

The couple didn’t have any pre-drawn conclusions about what they were looking for, but they had already looked at several retirement communities and they knew they weren’t ready for that lifestyle. Then, they visited The Springs at Sterling on the Lake community in Flowery Branch. The Aldrige’s were immediately attracted to the fact that the community offered many features that were common in 55-and-up communities, such as ranch homes, lawn maintenance and wider doorways, but there wasn’t an actual age restriction. They liked having amenities where children are playing, as well as active adult amenities that are available just to them.

The Aldridge’s chose a one-and-a-half story home that was built by Stonecrest Homes and includes more than 2,900 square feet of living space with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The home fit perfectly with their style, even improving upon their home in Charlotte with nicer granite and prettier finishes. As an added bonus, the furniture from their previous home worked with the new layout, making the transition smooth and easy.

One of the most interesting aspects of the new home is a beautiful breezeway between the front door and what Dick calls his “man cave.” This space, which is actually the mother-in-law suite, has become his home office and retreat, which allows Dick to spend time perfecting his hobby, woodworking.

In addition to their beautiful new home, the Aldrige’s love the many activities they that are planned by the community social director. Dick says they get weekly emails highlighting many of the upcoming functions, which has included the Harvest Balloon Festival, movies, dinners, concerts and other get-togethers in the past. The couple has also joined an empty nesters group, which regularly holds dinners, outings and other fun social events, and the community has swimming pools, a clubhouse, multiple lakes and activities that are perfect for their grandson. They also enjoy spending time at the beautiful new Hall County library that was built near the entrance to the community, as well as the nearby marinas and waterfront restaurants on Lake Lanier, including their new favorite, the Fish Tales Lakeside Grill.

But perhaps the best part about Dick and Gwen’s new home at The Springs at Sterling on the Lake is the fact that they are less than 25 minutes away from their daughter and grandson in Cumming, as well as from Dick’s brother in Gainesville.
