The prospect of foreclosure can be very scary, especially when you don’t know who to turn to for help. Thankfully, there are nonprofit organizations like NeighborWorks that can offer invaluable assistance to consumers on how to avoid foreclosure. NeighborWorks America is a national nonprofit organization created by Congress to provide financial support, technical assistance, and training for community-based revitalization efforts. NeighborWorks® organizations work with the Homeownership Preservation Foundation to support a nationwide assistance hotline, 888-995-HOPE, which can provide answers, connection to a counselor, and comprehensive telephone counseling to help homeowners avoid foreclosure, day or night. Their counselors are experts in foreclosure prevention and trained to set up a plan of action designed specifically for each consumer, at absolutely no charge.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) website has a list of HUD-approved counseling organizations, by state or consumers can call 800-569-4287 or TDD 800-877-8339 for help. Consumers should watch out for questionable counseling companies who advertise that, for a minimal fee, they  will assist homeowners by hiring a lawyer to defend the foreclosure in court or negotiate lender assistance on the borrowers’ behalf. Call a HUD-approved counseling organization, a local NeighborWorks® organization, or 888-995-HOPE before you paying or signing anything.

The Northeast Atlanta Metro Association of Realtors® has also launched a service designed to help homeowners facing foreclosure, www.unnecessaryforeclosure.com, which offers more information about the resources above and even more advice and resources on avoiding foreclosure.
