Native and long time Georgia residents are sure to be familiar with the great escapes waiting at Callaway Gardens. On today’s Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, Rachel Crumbley from Callaway Gardens joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick to share all the amazing end of summer events happening there.
About an hour south of Atlanta, tucked into 2,500 acres of gardens and lakes, Callaway Gardens is a non-profit dedicated to conservation and education, with a hearty dose of recreation on the side. Though the school year has begun across much of the state, Callaway has a full slate of ways to squeeze every drop out of these warm months.
On Labor Day weekend, Callaway Gardens will host the 19th annual Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival. Crumbley says that “the best times of day for hot air balloons are sunrise and sunset,” because the breezes tend to be gentler then. Guests can watch the balloons take flight at those times, and during the intervening hours, they can take tethered rides. This year, she says they will have a specialty balloon in the shape of a bald eagle. Pilots come from all over the country and the Gardens provide volunteer crews for each balloon. At dusk, the balloons ring the lake for a balloon glow, which she says are pure delight for photographers.
Those looking for a little more adrenaline can rent ski boats and even learn to ski. They can swim out to Aqua Island and jump and splash in the lake or they can rent bikes to ride the miles of trails. Crumbley says there are so many daily activities, guests are advised to visit the website and the information desk to plan an ideal visit – and then make arrangements to visit again.
