The Builder of the Year award is presented annually to a member of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association (HBA) who has demonstrated their commitment to professional excellence. This award recognizes a builder for their contributions to furthering the goals and mission of the HBA through volunteer efforts within the association, the housing industry as well as community and charitable service. The 2014 Builder of the Year is Mike Turner of The Home Service Store, Inc.

If you have been active in Atlanta’s home building industry for any length of time, then you’ve probably crossed paths with Michael Turner! Legend has it that Mike Turner, a Dawsonville native, built his first home when he was nine years old. Whether or not the legend is true, it is no secret that Turner has served his industry and professional associations for several decades.

Turner, vice president for The Home Service Store, is a Life member of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association’s Board of Directors. Mike was also a charter member of the Remodelers Council and served as the Council’s Chairman in 1991. A Life Spike, Mike has made significant contributions in the membership arena. He has served on the HBA’s Education Committee as well as five terms on the association’s Executive Committee. Turner also held the position of President of the HBA in 2013.

Turner has also held several prominent leadership positions in the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). He was the Chairman of NAHB’s Remodelers Council in 1998 and is a Life member of NAHB’s Board of Directors. Turner serves as a member of the NAHB Building Products Issues Committee, the NAHB Leading Suppliers Council and the NAHB Remodelers Council Leadership Committee.

The many prestigious honors Turner has received are indicative of his professionalism, leadership, industriousness and community service. In 1996, Mike was inducted into Remodeling Magazine’s Big 50 Hall of Fame in the category of Industry Impact and the following year, he was inducted into the Dawson County High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Turner was the recipient of the NAHB Remodelers Council’s National Remodeler of the Year Award. Most recently, he was one of eleven individuals in the country to earn the distinguished 2013 Designee of Year award in recognition of outstanding service in elevating the image of the NAHB educational designations.

Mike is a 1978 graduate of North Georgia College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, including a major in economics and minors in management, marketing and political science.  He currently holds five professional designations: Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR), Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS), Certified Green Professional (CGP), Graduate Master Builder (GMB) and Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR).

Turner’s philanthropic activities and charitable service is simply inspirational. He serves as a missionary to Honduras in Central America, Ghana and Haiti, and he has participated in more than a dozen international mission projects which included the construction of bridges, agricultural buildings, homes, churches and other community buildings. Mike has also worked on 10 Habitat for Humanity projects and has participated in numerous HomeAid Atlanta Care Days.

Best described as genuine and loyal, Mike Turner has made a positive difference at the local, state and national levels of the housing industry and his contributions will be felt for generations to come. An avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast, Mike is a devoted husband and father. Mike and his wife Julie have been married for 34 years and are the proud parents of three children.

The HBA is proud to recognize Mike Turner as the 2014 Builder of the Year.

The Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association’s OBIE Awards celebrates its 34th anniversary in 2014.
