Lib Thompson, president of The Sandy Springs Society, is today’s Around Atlanta guest on Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio. A charitable organization of more than 300 women, The Sandy Springs Society is committed to improving the community through philanthropic work. As the largest philanthropic agency in Sandy Springs, the group has raised and donated $2.8 million throughout its 26-year existence.

One of its main fundraisers each year is Tossed Out Treasures, which Thompson describes as an upscale resale event. Over the years, she has found everything from an old Burberry coat and steamer trunk to ball gowns and incredible artwork at the sale. This year’s event starts tonight, March 26 and lasts until Saturday, March 28.

The thousands of items at the sale come from member donations, neighbors and people from outside the society that have learned about it over the years. In addition, many stores donate brand new items that can be sold for profit. Last year, the event raised around $60,000, with every single dollar from the sale going to various community organizations.

In 2014, The Sandy Springs Society donated a total of $215,000 raised during Tossed Out Treasures and other events to 17 unique agencies around the city. These included the Sandy Springs Mission, who was able to purchase a bus; Mary Hall Freedom House; Heritage Sandy Springs and many others. The group’s philanthropy committee is currently in the process of interviewing the groups that have applied for grants for 2015.

When asked what first-time treasure hunters needed to know, Thompson’s main piece of advice was to shop early! She also notes that they can now accept credit cards at the event, and there will be sales taking place Saturday, including an afternoon half-off sale and a bag sale that evening.

This year’s Tossed Out Treasures event is taking place in the old Marshall’s location, which is located at 6334 Roswell Road. The preview party and first chance to shop takes place tonight, Thursday, March 26 beginning at 6 p.m., and tickets are $30 at the door. The event will also be open Friday, March 27 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
