Atlanta Habitat Lisa Gordon

As one of the largest of 1,500 U.S. affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International, and the largest nonprofit homebuilder in Atlanta and Fulton County, Atlanta Habitat delivers dramatic results and makes a positive difference in more than one way. Lisa Gordon, President/CEO of Atlanta Habitat for Humanity joins us on our Around Atlanta episode to talk about new partnerships and projects that will revitalize neighborhoods and communities.

From affordable homeownership, repairs and to empowering families in neighborhoods across Atlanta, Atlanta Habitat is expanding their programs and partnerships to ensure people have access to safe housing and vibrant neighborhoods with opportunities to thrive. “Our impact is on families and communities, not just a single home and homeowner,” explains Gordon. “We want community stabilization and we are striving for that by putting more focus on how we can help an entire community.”

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity transforms communities by acting as a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization through education, innovative development, partnerships, and long-term relationships with families. An interesting and unique component of their mission is the Atlanta Habitat ReStore. Thanks to generous donors across Atlanta, the ReStore sells new and gently used furniture, home accessories, building materials and appliance at a fraction of the retail price. All proceeds benefit Atlanta Habitat and help build more affordable homes in Atlanta.

During the interview, Gordon discusses their critical home repair programs such as Repair with Kindness and Brush with Kindness and talks about their build-the-block strategy. “As Atlanta Habitat continues to work with hardworking homeowners to buy their first home, we are also improving neighborhoods, block by block,” Gordon said. “Our investment in neighborhoods involves building quality affordable homes, performing critical home repairs for longstanding homeowners and reducing blight by purchasing vacant lots and dilapidated properties. By doing this strategic work, we are helping more families to live affordably in Atlanta and to be invested in creating vibrant neighborhoods where everyone thrives.”

Metro Atlanta currently has 80,000 to 100,000 people in need of affordable housing. If you or someone you know qualifies for an Atlanta Habitat home, visit www.atlantahabitat.org/application-process. However, the organization does not simply hand-over new homes. Tune into the podcast with the link above as Gordon details the extensive requirements to become a homeowner.

Each year more than 13,000 volunteers pick up a hammer to build a house, teach a class of new homeowners about budgeting, help customers in the Atlanta Habitat ReStore, and much more to empower Atlanta Habitat families. An upcoming event on April 13, will be a terrific opportunity for you and/or your company to help give back. Atlanta Habitat’s 2nd Annual Gala, Welcome to Our Neighborhood, will take place at Flourish Atlanta and will connect you to one of the top 10 affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International.
