Contrary to Atlanta’s past ranking among cities for greatest sprawl and pedestrian danger, in a recent study the city has ranked number eight for most walkable areas. Atlanta found their way on this list because recent urban growth trends have put things such as grocery stores, restaurants and offices within walking distance of growing areas of the population. The growth is expected to continue, as Atlanta ranked number five on a list of projected future rankings for walkable urbanism.
From Buckhead and Decatur to downtown Marietta and Sandy Springs, walkable Atlanta urban centers are popping up everywhere. Here are a few growing areas to keep your eye on:
Avalon – located in the heart of Alpharetta is this 86-acre development, scheduled to open October 30, 2014. Avalon will feature single-family residences, luxury rental homes, 559,000 square feet of retail space, a 14-screen movie theatre, four-star hotel and more – all built with a sustainable design. Upon completion, Avalon is projected to be a hub for local art, entertainment and activity.
Atlantic Station – this Midtown neighborhood opened in 2005, and has been growing ever since. The project was originally designed with energy efficiency and walkability in mind, with a goal for people to live and work in walking distance from everyday things. Atlantic Station is home to 10 living accommodations, Class A office spaces, restaurants, shops, fitness centers and other businesses. The neighborhood is host to a wide variety of events and opportunities for entertainment, all within walking distance from work and nearby residences.
Town Brookhaven – this top-of-the-line mixed-use development is located in Brookhaven off of Peachtree Road. Town Brookhaven is a pedestrian-friendly urban village featuring nearly 700 luxury residential apartments, restaurants, grocery stores, boutiques and other retailers. The village was designed to be convenient and accessible to all life’s necessities, and is continuing to grow.
Smyrna Market Village – since its inception in 2002, this Smyrna development has been offering a pedestrian-friendly village atmosphere. The village features 16 townhomes, restaurants, 40,000 square feet of retail space and 18,000 square feet of office space. The downtown area features a City Library, Community Center and City Hall, adding to the village appeal.
