People can give gifts in any number of ways, but the gift of theatre is a truly unique and beautiful experience. The Atlanta Black Theatre Festival gives this gift by inviting artists and audiences from all over the place to share artistic experiences together and discuss how the art applies to today’s world. On today’s Around Atlanta segment of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, Toni Henson, producing director of the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival, joins co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick to promote this weekend’s festival and its activities.
Henson has a business background and has produced theatre as a hobby for several years. During the recession, she was inspired to return to producing theatre and looked for an Atlanta Black Theatre Festival to produce, but there was not one. This led her to create her own.
The “festival of 40 plays in four days” allows over 200 artists from all over the country and all over the world to put together a number of performances. Guests of the festival can view countless readings, plays and more. Every year, the festival also hosts a town hall meeting. The theme of this year’s town hall is “What the Heck Are We Fighting For?” to address the artist’s response to the need for healing in communities. The town hall allows artists and guests to participate in discussions about how to respond to current issues.
Henson’s mission through the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival is to give back to the community and use her gifts to uplift and expose people to the art of theatre.
